Privacy Tip #227 – Sextortion Ransomware

According to Emsisoft, a digital security research firm malicious data attacks called ransomware have become more sophisticated and malicious lately. Rather than the standard demand of money for releasing data, websites, or information hackers are using ransomware to demand explicit photographs of victims. The new attack is called Ransomwared. The type of security breach is especially difficult to deal with as it concerns personal, and explicit data which can be further used to ransom an individual for additional pictures or money.

Key Takeaways:

  • Ransomwared is a type of ransomware in which criminals demand explicit photos of the victim.
  • This deepens the vulnerability of the victim, who now has to worry that the explicit photos may be circulated online.
  • The No More Ransom Project provides fixes for many types of ransomware attacks.

“Ransomware continues to be extremely problematic for companies and individuals. Although there is a fix to Ransomwared, it shows the lengths to which criminals will go to torture victims and exert power over them.”
