Parks In San Antonio

San Antonio is the 2nd most populated city in Texas. They have roughly 1.5 million people. As in all large cities, the comfort and relaxation of their citizens are important. This is evident in the many area parks. There are various types of parks. Kiddie Park

Kiddie Park is the oldest amusement park in America. Kiddie Park was built in 1925. It features carnival-style rides, including a Ferris wheel and a famous hand-carved HerschellSpillman carousel. In 2001, the park was renovated, but great care was taken to maintain the 1920’s style and the authenticity of the original park. There are many other rides, great old-fashion vendors, and the park is meticulously maintained. This is a step back in time where you can enjoy the day with the kids.

San Pedro Springs Park

If you want a true feel of the city of San Antonio, you should visit this historical park. San Pedro Springs Park is the oldest in the state of Texas, and the 2nd oldest park in the United States. The 46-acres on which the park sits was reserved for the use of the people by the Spanish Government in the 18th century.

The park is beautiful. When it was created, it was built around the natural springs of the area. The government eventually would put in aqueducts to provide water to the homes of its citizens. Through the years, the park declined. However new interest was shown in the late 1800’s, and restoration began.

The park features a gazebo, Japanese and sunken gardens, walking and riding trails, a public pool, playhouse, playgrounds, and everything you would want in a naturally beautiful and well-maintained park.

San Antonio Botanical Gardens

This 33-acre, non-profit Garden is the crown jewel of modern-day San Antonio. The lush plant life, beautiful blooming flowers and plants, walking trails, and educational tours are just the beginning. They offer a wide range of classes for adults and children.

Hike the Texas Nature Trail, visit the Lucile Halsell Conservatory. Pick up one of the bird spotting guides and enjoy the creatures that call this Garden home. Don’t forget to visit the gift shop for souvenirs. This is a must do. It is like the Garden of Eden, Texas style.

Government Canyon State Natural Area preserves

If you want to experience Texas in its natural state, you should visit the Government Canyon State Natural Area Preserves. This area is 12,244 acres of rugged hills and canyons. There are hiking trails and most allow for bicyclists. The trails are marked, but you are encouraged to watch for hikers if you are biking.
